Topological 4-manifolds and the disc embedding theorem

ABSTRACT  |  Freedman's disc embedding theorem paved the way for a huge leap in our understanding of 4-dimensional manifolds, especially in the topological category. Perhaps the flagship result is the classification of simply connected 4-manifolds up to homeomorphism. I will give a summary of the proof of the disc embedding theorem, and introduce some of the techniques used. I hope to provide enough explanation that the audience will feel able to read about this topic in more detail with renewed confidence.
